So when they tore down the turkey sheds and restored the property to vine, they put in a few acres of Sylvaner and Riesling in addition to the requisite Pinot Noir and Chardonnay - a wink to that earlier chapter. The Marianis believe its then-owner, German immigrant Emil Dresel, may have been the first to bring certain German grape varieties, like Sylvaner, into the United States. Pre-poultry, and pre-Prohibition, the property had once been a vineyard. “Because of our uncle, we had some good connections,” Andrew Mariani says. They have two business partners: winemaker Kristof Anderson and their uncle Andrew Avellar, who owns Carneros Vineyard Management. “There were turkeys up there until the day we took over,” says Andrew, 34.Īt the time of the purchase, the brothers were both in their early 20s. In 2007, when the brothers purchased the 250-acre ranch, it was an industrial turkey farm, imposed upon by 16 metal turkey sheds. The Scribe estate sprawls across the Sonoma Valley flatlands, at the base of Arrowhead Mountain. “But I think we were captivated by the deeper cultural side of wine.” “Farming was always part of our lives,” says Adam, 30. They grew up in Winters (Yolo County), heirs to the Mariani Nut Co., a major processor of walnuts and almonds that farms several thousand acres and exports its products globally.
