She is also referred to in the deuterocanonical books at Wisdom 10:7 and the New Testament at Luke 17:32. She is not named in the Bible but she's called "Ado" or "Edith" in some Jewish traditions. The Book of Genesis describes how she became a pillar of salt after she turned back at Sodom. In the Bible, Lut's wife is a figure first mentioned in Genesis 19. Lot’s wife disobeyed God's warning by tunning back to see the destruction of the city of Sodom and she was punished by being turned into a "pillar of salt" while her husband, Lut and their daughters escape from a depiction in the Monreale Cathedral mosaics. The Quran also draws upon Lot's wife as an "example of a unbeliever" as she was married to a righteous man who's a prophet but refused to believe in his message and was thus condemned to Hell. Lot and those who believed in him, were to be spared, but his wife was to die in the destruction, with the angels stating that "she is of those who lag behind". While there, they also told him that they had been sent by God to the "guilty people" of Lut to destroy them with "a shower of stones of clay". ![]() One day, a group of angels visited Abraham as guests in order to inform him of the fact that his wife Sarah was pregnant with Isaac. The Quran clearly states that Lut was a nephew of Abraham who had been sent to the twin cities of Sodom and Gomorrah as a prophet after migrating to Canaan, but he was rejected by the people. The destruction of the city of Sodom and Gomorrah is traditionally presented as a warning against harassment. Like the Biblical narrative, the Quran states that Lot's messages were ignored by the people of the cities, and Sodom and Gomorrah were subsequently destroyed. ![]() He was sent to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah as a prophet, and was commanded to preach to their inhabitants on monotheism and the sinfulness of their lustful and violent acts, that was how he became a prophet of God.Īlthough prophet Lot was not born among the people he'd been sent to preach to, the people of Sodom are still regarded as his "brethren" in the Quran. Lot was born to Haran and spent his younger years there, later he migrated to Canaan with his uncle Abraham. Prophet Lut is known as Lot in the Old Testament of the bible, and he is a prophet of God in the Quran. ![]()
